The battery condition is critical to the operation of the car as many functions - ignition, steering, sliding doors, air conditioning all rely on the battery being up to scratch.
Batteries can go flat in a short time if it has gone low capacity or there is a discharge through a fault on the car. On both my 1007's (1.4 Dolce and 1.6 Sport) I found that initially there was a discharge of 1.6amps - this dropped to 15-20mA after 30 seconds or so - enough to just drive the essential circuits.
I then tried a drop test - this places a heavy load on the battery for about 15 seconds and checks the drop in battery voltage. On the 1.6 Sport I found the battery would deliver 125amps but drop to 10.3 volts and at 250amps dropped to 10.0 volts as would be expected. However on the 1.4 Dolce, (which appeared to be an original 2004/5 Varta battery so 7/8 years old) dropped to 9.6 volts at 125 amps but went right down to 7.0 volts at 250 amps which is well below acceptable. It was replaced (see next para).
Changing the Battery (info courtesy of Scott Harrison)You need to slide out the circuit board to the left of the photo first. Then push the plastic catch on the right and tilt the battery out to remove it. Not the obvious solution...!
WARNING! - see the bottom of this page for the correct way to disconnect and reconnect the battery
Engine dies or gearbox is erraticThe alternator is controlled by the main computer and is not an independent device as normal. When the alternator stops working the battery volts start to drop and the cpu will start cutting out the high demanding systems - like air conditioning - until it stops operating the electrical throttle body and finally cuts out the engine. If the voltage drops below 12.4 volts you will have problems including the Tiptronic shifting. Thunder Storm
FusesAccess to the fuse panel in the glove box is not obvious: - first release the white lever (mine was already broken and the panel is well enough secured without it) which locks the panel in position with a quarter-turn.
Then reach underneath and feel for a springy piece of plastic; on my RHD cars this is on the left near the back of the fuse panel (closest to the lid and the outside of the car). Push this sideways at the same time as pulling the fuse box assembly forward and down. The whole box can be lowered by pulling forward and the bulkhead end downwards so the pegs disengage along the grooves - it is a tight fit! Simple once you know!
The cigar lighter socket is fed from F22 (this is on the second row back; yellow 20amp fuse just to the right of the link SH)
Unfortunately several sockets in the OBD connector were damaged so the OBD connector was changed. This involved getting one from a scrap car with a short length of wire attached and then removing the existing connector (push out backwards and extract by gently prising the plastic support parts apart). Reconnect wire for wire (I used solder and heatshrink) and refit.Under the bonnet, the battery is revealed by simply pulling up on the front and then rear covers - reseat them carefully on replacing (use a torch!).
There is a further fusebox under the bonnet, to the right of the battery when standing in front of the car. Access is by pushing the clip holding the right-hand edge to the right; this should release the cover which simply lifts off.
If this lid is not replaced properly, WATER CAN GET INTO THE FUSEBOX and can drain down into the FUSEBOX IN THE GLOVE LOCKER with dire results. Locate the lid in position and press down hard until the clip at the right hand edge clicks into place.
Process of Rebooting the BSI (Body Control Module) in a Peugeot:- The very first step is to unplug the diagnostic tool from the vehicle.
- Make sure all the gadgets are switched off, the driver’s window lowered down and open the bonnet.
- Then close all the doors and take off the key from ignition.
- After a 3 minute interval, unplug the vehicle’s battery terminals and wait for a further 15 seconds.
- Attach back the battery terminals and give a 10 second pause making sure the doors are closed.
- Turn the side lights on.
- Now turn the engine on and inspect the system functioning.
- Press and hold down the lock button on the key for 10 seconds.
- Check the central locking system by unlocking and locking the door consecutively.
- Turn the engine on again and finish inspecting the system.
Any other procedure could cause malfunctioning of different units which depend on BSI.
Method for unplugging the battery:
- Before unplugging the battery, turn off all gadgets and lights, closing all the doors and unplugging any kind of diagnostic tool. The drivers side window has to be kept open for any kind of requirement.
- Turn off the ignition and take out the key following which unplug the battery after an interval of 3 minutes.
- The BSI needs to be taken to Sleep mode or Active Economy mode, during which nothing in the vehicle should be operating. Even the bonnet should not be opened that time as it can "wake up" the BSI if the vehicle has got an alarm installed. For batteries under the bonnet, the bonnet should be opened and left up before allowing the BSI to go to Sleep Mode. During this 3 minute interval, use of any remote control central locking gadgets for other vehicles should be avoided in the vicinity of the concerned vehicle.
The following procedure is for reinstalling the battery connection unless told otherwise by Peugeot or Product service. Failure to follow this procedure may result in damage to the BSI’s embedded software during reconnection.
- All the doors have to be closed with the ignition key turned off and the key taken out.
- Now without opening the doors, reconnect the battery and wait for 10 seconds.
- Turn on the headlights, turn on the engine and inspect the system’s functioning.

The BSI and the ECU MUST be matched together; it is not possible to fit a second hand BSI to a Peugeot.- The engine ECU and the BSI have to be matched.
- Each ECU in a correctly functioning system has a 4 digit code programmed into it.
- Once this code is entered into the ECU it will not be possible to be read, deleted or modified.
- The second hand BSI can't be matched to the existing engine ECU even if you know both codes from both ECU's.
- In order to fit a new BSI you need to know the correct security code of the existing engine ECU so you can enter this code in the new BSI.
- If you get this wrong the new BSI will become unusable.
- If you don't know the correct code for the existing engine ECU then you need to replace the engine ECU and the BSI.
- They then will need to be configured and matched. If the code to the vehicle is not known you can make up a code in this case but make sure you enter the same code in both ECU. It could be an expensive exercise to get this one wrong.
- Peugeot Dealers can obtain the security codes for a particular vehicle if you are the lawful owner.
- The odometer reading (distance travelled) is memorised in the BSI and the instrument panel. If you connect a second hand BSI with a reading higher then the one on the instrument, the distance on the instrument will increase to the higher BSI reading as soon as it is connected to the car.
- So beware, a customer would not be happy if his distance suddenly jumped up several thousand kilometres.
- There is one way you can fit a second hand BSI. Use the engine ECU from the same donor car where the BSI came from.
- It would then still be helpful if you can obtain the donor cars 4 digit security code for future programming, and also remember the issue with the distance. The distance reading won't be a problem if the donor car has lower distance then the recipient, the distance in the BSI will then simply go up to the correct distance.
Car with auto air conditioning unit (climate control) found that, whatever the settings were, the fan was always on and consistent irrespective of the fan setting. This was cured by replacing the failed heater rheostat and the heater motor switch.
To reset 2-tronic gearbox electronicsBEFORE you disconnect the battery you must let the systems go into stand-by or you will create ‘errors’. And after you reconnect the battery you need to let the systems initialize before doing anything further.
Ensure the windows are up ensure everything is off (e.g. radio) make sure the key is out of the ignition and close all the doors and hatch (do not lock the car). Flip the rear ‘screen wiper down (on ‘reset’ the rear wiper sometimes runs for a few seconds).
Prop the bonnet up and remove the two battery covers. WAIT A MINIMUM OF 60 SECONDS before removing the + battery terminal. Leave it off for a few seconds. Then reconnect it. WAIT A MINIMUM OF 60 SECONDS after reconnecting the + terminal before opening the doors and fiddling about!
After that, hop in the car and have a look at the gear selector readout on the instrument display. It should have a “-“ sign as the gear selected. If it doesn’t, disconnect the battery for a longer time.
If you do have a “-“ sign, put your foot on the brake (press down) and turn the ignition to “on” (NOT start). The gearbox should hum and click and clack for a good 30 seconds or so, keep your foot on the brake during this time. At the end of this cycle the gear selector on the dash should show “N” or a number. If the gearbox doesn't make any noise and a “N” or a number appears straight away, remove the battery terminal as above and try again.
You should now have to set the date, time and your radio stations. Flip rear wiper up. Take the car for a run
